What is enrichment?
You might have heard about enrichment for dogs, but what actually is it?
Enrichment is "The action of improving the quality of your dog’s day and doing what they find rewarding." Eduardo Fernandez PHD
When we add something to their environment, it can help improve behaviours.
There are a number of ways you can provide enrichment to your dog. Firstly, training. Training functions as enrichment, it not only helps fundamental behaviours but also stimulates and builds our dog’s brains and memory, building their repertoire.
Another form of enrichment is to give our dogs access to a variety of locations, changing up their experiences, allowing them to use all their senses, sight, sound, smell, touch, taste.
Where can this happen? Take them to off leash dog friendly beaches, different parks - bush walks (use a long line for safety while training takes place if new to bush walking with your dog) and so on…
Follow your dog, watch them, look at their body language, talk to them and enjoy getting to know what makes your dog happy.
